Why the French Riviera?

After 16 years in Provence (Grillon 84) and after running a “Guesthouse & Dinner” for many years, we thought it was time for a change. We went on vacation to greet an old couple who have a small house in the small village of Olivetta san Michele, above Ventimiglia.

We had been there before, it’s a little paradise on earth. When we got there, the couple, 85 and 90 years old, told us that they could not stay because of their age and just put the house up for sale …. Bingo!

This was the moment we were waiting for and two days later we signed the pre-contract. Lucky, I say afterwards, that we didn’t know what we were getting into … An old stone house to renovate became a challenge that almost ruined us and put the relationship to the test.

Now, 7 years later, everything is almost finished. I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else in the world! And with a job at Wretman Estate! Who would have thought that!

The best ski station in the area?

I love the hiking and cross-country skiing paradise of Casterino, in the Roya Valley, above St Dalmas de Tende. Here you can hike in the summertime and discover the Parc de Merveille nature reserve with its prehistoric rock engravings.

In winter time you can go fantastic skiing trails, ski skiing, snowshoeing or even dog sledding! You think you have come to Canada! A pearl. And almost untouched by tourism …

For how long have you been living in France?

I moved here in 1996 with my Dutch husband and 2 toddlers, then 2 more arrived!

What do you do on a day off?

I go to the horse in Sospel, paddle in the stable, ride and forget the outside world. My 19-year-old angloarab Nuts de Ferriere I have had for 14 years now. I bought him, just newly hired when he turned 5, and that’s the way it is. My soul mate.

What did you do before joining Wretman Estate?

I ran a “guesthouse & dinner”, type Bed and Breakfast, although instead of the guests have their own holiday home, but 2-3 times a week I cooked the dinner. Had 3 guesthouses and 12 dinner guests for about 9 years. It was fantastic fun, but I set the bar high with 4 course dinners including apéro, which took up almost the whole day. I still rent out our new place in Italy / France, but without cooking.

For how long have you been working at Wretman Estate ?

Karin recruited me in September 2019, and it is the most fun and exciting thing that has happened to me in LONG! It’s never too late for new challenges. Thanks karin! And thank you Filip and Johan for believing in me.
